Delivering EU payments to Irish farmers
Since 2014, Version 1 has been DAFM’s trusted partner, responsible for the design and support of all core systems enabling payments for EU agricultural support schemes. A newly developed system went live in 2015, issuing over €1.2 billion of EU Direct Payments to farmers in its first year and putting Ireland among the first to make these payments.

Farmers often failed to classify their grant applications as sensitive, and agents sometimes uploaded documents to the wrong application. As a result, sensitive personal data was exposed to BPS employees or even other farmers, creating compliance risks.

In 2016 Version 1 was awarded the contract for Live Service Support for the digital service implemented to administer the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The CAP digital service was described by DEFRA in its 2012 Digital Strategy as “…a fundamental end-to-end redesign of the whole process, introducing a single IT solution with digital delivery..”

I have worked within the Agri-Gov space for over ten years and remain excited about the interlock between Technoloy, Policy and Innovation and how they can combine to drive productivity, sustainability and future fiscal stability across the Agricultural sector.

With over five years' experience working with Government, I'm currently a Public Sector Commercial Lead at Version 1.
I am passionate about driving positive outcomes for society, and demonstrate this by helping clients seek out innovative ways to solve challenges, drive efficiencies and improve services in the Agri-Gov Space. In addition, I care deeply about delivering excellence in social value and sustainability, and am excited to champion these areas with Version 1 and our customers.

I have been designing and delivering community impact since 2011, working initially in the community arts and moving into IT Services in 2021 as Social Value Manager at Version 1.
Since joining the tech industry, I've been a contributor to discourse on social value in Northern Ireland, supporting Strategic Investment Board NI and, more recently, the NI Assembly All Party Group with insights on partnership working with voluntary, community, and social enterprises.
Niall O'Dónaill
I lead strategic engagement with Agri-Gov clients, supporting digital transformation initiatives that address complex challenges across agriculture and environmental governance.
With 15 years experience in public sector portfolio leadership, I work with organisations such as the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) to modernise legacy systems, enhance service delivery, with my team introducing innovative solutions.
